Common questions

Shoe molding or quarter round?

Shoe is slimmer and follows small dips in the floor, so it's the usual pick against baseboard. Quarter round is fuller and hides wider gaps, which is why it's common at cabinets and toe-kicks.

Why is trim needed at all?

Wood floors need an expansion gap at the walls so they can move with humidity. Shoe, quarter round, cove or baseboard covers that gap and protects the wall.

Can I stain white primed molding?

No, primed trim is meant for paint. For a stained finish, choose the solid wood species that matches your floor.

Which transition do I need?

Floors at different heights take a reducer. Floors at the same height take a T-molding. Where the floor stops, at a slider or exterior door, use a threshold.
